Toy Fair NYC: Hot new toys for 2017

The 114th annual North American International Toy Fair at the Javits Center offered something for every kind of kid -- superhero action dolls for girls, figures and playsets from "Star Wars" and Disney Junior shows for movie and TV buffs, and robots, coding toys and more for science geeks.

Toy Fair is a four-day event where more than 1,000 companies debut toys kids and parents can expect to see in 2017. Some old favorites were given some new twists -- for instance, a Frisbee-like disc will stream a playlist from a smartphone. "These are toys that have been in our lives forever but are seeing what I call an upgrade," said Laurie Schacht, who lives in Woodmere and is widely known as the "Toy Insider Mom" because she's co-publisher of The Toy Insider, a consumer guide for parents.

While it's hard to say what the best new toys of 2017 will be, here are some toys your kids may be clamoring for this year. The Slither.io app has been downloaded 150 million times. In the game, the worm-like creatures slide around in different colorful "skins," including rainbow, patriotic and more, while gobbling up glowing orbs. The Slither.io toy line from Bonkers Toys will bring those characters into the real world, starting with Slither.io Bendable Blind Bags, which will hold one of 15 different colored skins. $5.99; for ages 3 and up; available March. The Slither.io product line will expand this summer/fall 2017 with small and large plushes, collector vinyl figures, backpack clips and more.

Can you become the biggest snake? That's the question posited by the massively-popular mobile game, Slither.io. With over 150 million downloads, and over 120 million plays per day, Slither.io has been consistently been Google Play's #1 free game, and now it's making the jump to toys. Revealed this month at Toy Fair 2017 in New York, Bonkers Toys is bringing Slither.io to life as a line of blind bag collectibles, and later, plush. While we're not at Toy Fair in-person, some of the first samples of the Slither.io blind bags made their way to Rock Father HQ in Illinois, and The Rock Daughters™ (already familiar with the game) were more than happy to crack into four of them. Check out the video below!

Available in a variety of color schemes (Finley was really hoping for an "American Flag" version), these are pretty solid, bendable figures with some good "weight" to them. Since they're all the same shape, the usual habit of "feeling up" the blind bags won't work in helping decipher the contents of said bags - a device that will foil the plot of people like myself (I'm not a fan of duplicates, though that's part of the fun for kids).

ater this year, the Slither.io plush line will roll out, featuring blind box backpack clips, and assortments of large and small plush. Look for all of these at stores near you very soon, and be sure to check out Bonkers Toys' official site for more! Bonus: Have you seen Bonkers' line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles blind bag keychains?

At first glance, Slither.io seemed like just another game of Snake on the internet. Two hours later, I was still playing, on a serious mission trying to have the longest snake out of everyone else playing at that time.

Sounds weird, right? Let me explain! Slither.io is a multiplayer game of Snake, with the No. 1 goal of being the longest player of the day. However, the catch is that everyone is competing against each other. If your head touches another player, you will explode and die (this sounds worse than it actually is). But, if another player runs into you, they will explode and you can eat their remains.

The game is available for iOS and Android devices, and can also be played in a web browser on a desktop or laptop. When you first start, you just enter a nickname (I chose “Dumbledore” to deter people from trying to mess with the greatest wizard of all time) and can change the color of your slither’s skin. There’s all different colors of the rainbow, some with flags of different countries, and more, so there’s something for everyone!

I chose to Slither on my iPhone, giving me the option of playing online or playing against A.I. The latter option is great for when kids don’t have access to data, so they won’t eat it all up, or perfect for parents who want peace of mind while their kids are gaming with multiplayer games. But, unlike other multiplayer games, kids will not be able to communicate with other players besides actually playing the game itself. The only information you have of other players’ are their nicknames.

To play, you must navigate your slither around a circular game board, with a map on the bottom right corner to show you where you are. To get bigger, you must consume glowing dots around the board. They either randomly appear throughout the game board, come up on another players’ trail when they use a boost, or present themselves in the form of the remains of players who have died. The amount that you eat is calculated on the bottom left side of the game, which also ranks you against everyone else playing. The top right shows a leaderboard, displaying the top 10 longest players and their scores. Eating remains of other players is hands-down the best method to gain the most points, and you can use your energy as a boost to go even faster.

A surprising amount of strategy is required to be successful in the game, and I’ve broken it down to three main strategies. One: Become long enough to circle around your opponents (pictured above). At some point, they will be trapped and they will be out of the game. Two: If you’re tiny, you still have a chance to make it big. If you’re skilled enough to make a bold move, you can speed up and make other players run into you and get their remains. Three, and most boring: Stay out of everyone’s way and eat the tiny glowing boost, getting bigger at the slowest pace.

However, getting too greedy might be your downfall. If you try to swerve in front of players (especially while using a boost), you may accidentally run into them. Or, if you’re trying to get to the glowing dots that are the remains after another player exploded, you could also accidentally run into another player. But, sometimes, you’re just at the right place at the right time.

Slither.io fans won’t have to wait long to get toys based on the game. Next month, blind bags, plush, collector vinyl figures, backpack clips, and more will hit store shelves from Bonkers Toys.

Banking on the success of its app "Slither.io" which was recently named the most googled game for 2016, Lowtech Studios is now bringing the now well-recognized brand into toys and apparels. YouTube/DanTDM

Slither.io" developer Lowtech Studios' move could not have been more well-timed. After the surprise revelation that its gaming app has been named the most googled game for 2016, the developer is quick to partner with a toy maker as well as apparel manufacturers in a move that could bring in sizable cash flow to its coffers.

In a surprise revelation from online giant Google, it was not triple-A titles with their jaw-dropping actions and graphics that dominated the game searches in 2016. Instead, simple browser-based games that even toddlers can play reigned supreme this year - "Slither.io" at the top followed by "Agar.io" on second place, reports Venture Beat.

Besting several multi-million budgeted title launches of 2016, Lowtech Studios' "Slither.io" became the top searched game for 2016. The game is a massively multiplayer browser-based app which rose to popularity mainly driven by famous YouTubers such as PewDiePie and Dan TDM posting videos of themselves playing the game. Sure enough, their millions of youtube subscribers followed suit and the game became an overnight success.

Now, Lowtech Studios is at the right stage to cash in on the phenomenal success of its "Slither.io" app, even outside ads and download stats. The developer has now partnered with toy manufacturer Bonkers Toys for a licensing agreement, reports Licensing.biz. Bonkers Toys CEO Brian Bonnet expressed thrill in partnering with "Slither.io" to bring the now well-recognized brand to the toy industry. In the works are a line of true-to-license collectibles, blind bags and more, which is scheduled for release by spring of 2017.

Lowtech Studios has also finalized licensing agreements with two other firms to bring the "Slither.io" brand to consumer goods. Dallas-based Everything Legwear has been contacted for a line of socks while Manic Merch has already agreed to a "Slither.io" range of apparel. All three deals were brokered by Tie In Pro's Lisa Wright.
